The Carpenter Branch is one of the most heavily used in the St. Louis system. It was the last library built with Carnegie funds and is a local landmark building. The original building is in the background of the photos. The low potion os the original auditorium, the focus of the landmark designation. It was totally rebuilt and restored and repurposed as the patron computer center. The original reading room was converted into a large Children's Library.
The addition and restoration more than doubled the size of the original and involved seismic retrofit and accessibility for eisting spaces. The addition houses new entries from the street and rear parking. These tall pavilions take design cues from the original and other buildings by the original architect, Trueblood and Graf. Also in the addiiton are circulationa areas and main reading room and stack area. A community meeitng room is in the basement of the
M•D•T was design architect for the Carpenter Branch. Manske Corporation Architects of St. Louis were architects of record.addition.
